The 1st Khelo India University Games, Odisha.
They came, they played, they conquered - The top 100 universities of India. Yes, the TOP 100 UNIVERSITIES of India with 6000+ athletes and 3000+ staff members gathered in the spirit of athleticism to play for the pride of their respective universities under the title of 1st ever Khelo India University Games, Odisha. KIUG 2020 was introduced with an aim to pave the way for our future Olympic medallists by the Prime Minister of India and the Union Sports Minister of India. The tournament was launched soon after the end of the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games, Guwahati.
Being sports, it was imperative to touch the right chord of every young athlete participating in the championship – The josh, the jazbaa, the battle cry that voiced the energy to give it all they have and fight till the end and take their university to the top. KIUG 2020 was unlike any championship where competitors beat it out. This was a battle between the universities and Social Media was the place to record moments which exhibited resilience, perseverance, passion and unity.
With our campaign #KIUG2020 on the social media channels of Khelo India, we captured stories that transpired beyond just sports and also focussed on the Bhubaneswar city hosting the games. We met participants who represented India on national and international levels, and documented their experience for the world to see and get inspired. Along with this, we recorded games that were organised for the first time in India. Like, fencing and rugby. These are some sports played by many in India but the platform was drawn for the first time to showcase hidden talents.
The idea was to create an atmosphere on social media that celebrated what’s happening on and off the field. Like parents cheering for their kids, students taking up fun challenges and rigorously supporting their teams with crazy slogans, wonderful fan moments; that’s what sports is all about, right? From interviews of former Olympians who came for talent hunts to fun videos of audiences who came to support their friends, we had them all in one place under a successful online campaign proudly called #KIUG2020.
